The Honorable Timothy K. Lewis was appointed by President George H.W. Bush in 1991 as a Judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, where he sat until 1992, when President Bush appointed him to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Judge Lewis remained on the bench until 1999, when he returned to private practice, specializing in appellate litigation. Since leaving the bench, Judge Lewis has also been very active in civil rights and human rights causes. For example, he chaired a series of town meetings and hearings called by Amnesty International on the subject of “Racial Profiling, Pre- and Post-9/11”, and was co-chair of the National Committee on the Right to Counsel, a bipartisan committee established to review the indigent defense system.
